Air Conditioner and Heater Maintenance Tips

It would be great if we could just turn on our heating and air conditioning systems whenever the weather calls for it and let it deliver the exact temperature we want to keep our homes comfortable. Usually, this is the case but we rely too much on our heaters or air conditioners to do their jobs of providing us with a cozy atmosphere that we often forget that they don’t operate or sustain themselves. Regular inspection and maintenance is needed to keep them at tip-top shape.

Air Conditioning Maintenance

The initial thing to do is to check if your AC is draining properly and that it isn’t leaking. Inspect the hose for any leaks or cracks that may allow too much water to escape and the tubes for any blockages that may impede it from draining properly. Both cases indicate that your air conditioner isn’t running as it should.

Make sure the compressor is free from debris and dust so air can flow freely. The filters also have to be regularly cleaned every 4-5 weeks, especially if anyone in the house has allergies. Your ductwork on the other hand should be cleaned every 3-4 years, making the air in your home clearer and dust free.

Heater Maintenance

Before the colder months arrive, give your heater a dry run by testing if it delivers a good level of warmth. If you have a natural gas system, check the color of the flame, it should be clear blue. A yellow or orange flame indicates a sign of a problem. If you experience any problems on either situation, it’s time to contact a repairman to do some work before you find yourself freezing come winter time.

Regularly inspect your furnace and change the filters every year. Filters that are dirty or have an accumulation of dust cause the unit to exert extra effort in order for it to deliver heat. In the long run this may cause damage to your unit and even a spike in your energy consumption

Just like air conditioning units, allow proper flow of air from the vents in order for it circulate the right amount of temperature throughout the room. Keep curtains, furniture or plants from blocking the vents.

With proper maintenance, a unit can last you a good 12 – 15 years or even more. If you have doubts about its efficiency or effectiveness, don’t hesitate to contact a professional. Regular check-ups are also necessary even if you do not detect any problems. This ensures that your home will stay comfortably warm or cool throughout the year.

Mobile Phone Mishaps On Building Sites

Opps! I Broke It

We’ve all had that clumsy moment where we’ve fumbled with something and its broken.  Nothing is worse than the heart attack from dropping our phones on a building site!  What should you do when you’ve dropped or nearly destroyed your phone?  Are all those photos and contacts lost?

  • It should go without saying, the insurance your phone carrier offers you is worthwhile to have. Although the normal wear and tear usually isn’t covered, nor is water damage – cracked screens, broken buttons and the like.  So its worth taking a closer look into the offer the next time you’re upgrading.

  • You don’t have to buy a new phone! Often taking one to a mobile iPhone repair shop is far more inexpensive that replacing the phone outright.  Sometimes the fix can be quick like just replacing the screen, and that is far easier than a full handset replacement.

  • If you’ve cracked the screen, clear packing tape is a quick way to hold all of the glass shards together while you get the phone to a repair shop. Beware of quick do-it-yourself kits or Ebay deals, often they are not actually compatible and a bad repair can do more harm than good.

  • If you have water damaged your phone, turn it off as quickly as possible so it doesn’t short circuit. If your phone has a removable battery, take it out.  Remove the SIM card and memory card if you have one installed.  Shake all the water out and place in a sealed container of instant rice or silica gel (or even silica cat litter) for 48 hours.  Try turning it back on again to see it works before placing your SIM and memory cards back in.

  • Did the damage cause you to lose your data? If so, connect it to your computer and laptop and see if you can reset if from one of your backup files.  Never backed it up?  Contact a repair shop and see if they can retrieve it from your device.  Now put it on your calendar to plug in your phone at least once a month to avoid anything that has precious value to you from being lost.

  • Is the damage causing your battery to overheat? This is serious and should be taken to a repairer as soon as possible.  Damaged batteries can cause fire, explosions and burns, especially if you keep them in your pocket.  You can tell a battery is damaged if it is running abnormally hot, no longer keeping a charge, or has warped or bubbled.

  • Maybe you just want to wait it out until your next phone upgrade from your carrier. You or one of your friends or family have a spare that you can borrow.  Bummer! Its not unlocked and not on your network so your SIM is useless.  Take your new (borrowed) phone to a repair shop for an inexpensive IMEI unlocking so that it can run on your network.

Almost anything can be fixed, if you take the time to do it.  If you’ve got an attachment to your phone, look into getting is fixed rather than replaced.  Your wallet will thank you!

Tips For Clearing Your Drain Clog

Don’t you often wish you had a trusted plumber to answer your questions? We all worry about being taken advantage of during our services calls and in the back of your mind, you wonder if there wasn’t something that you could have done yourself if you just had a little push in the right direction. Today, I am going to give you a tip that may come in handy some day when you have a clogged sink or tub drain. Being a professional plumber and getting to meet so many people every day, it seems that every other day I get asked “how can I clear a clogged drain by myself?” While it takes a little effort to try, the following tip could just save you a bunch of money.

While there will always be some stoppages caused by objects that don’t belong in your drain lines like toys or tree roots that will require the tools and skills of a plumber, there are many times when you can clear the clog by yourself. So, why not give it a try? If the clog is not cleared you can always call a plumber. You really do not have anything to lose but some time and a little effort. Bearing in mind of course that for stoppages that are deep within your plumbing system, a professional plumber with a snake will probably be required to clear the clog for you.

This tip to clear your clogged drain involves the use of boiling hot water. Be very careful when you attempt this in order to avoid burning yourself or someone else! The first thing to try is boiling water and baking soda. Boil some water in a pot on the stove and try to make it a fairly large one. Once the water in the pot has come to a boil, you should pour 2 cups of baking soda down the drain that is running slowly and then get the pot of boiling water and pour the water down the drain. However, if you do not have enough room in the sink or tub for the extra water due to your clog, do not attempt this tip as the boiling water will have nowhere to go and spill all over your floor!

As a slight variation to this tip, you can try this technique by using Vinegar and baking soda. In this case, you would use a cup of vinegar and a cup of baking soda instead of the two cups of baking soda. Again keep in mind that, if you do not have ample room for the extra hot water from your pot due to standing water resulting from the clog, do not try this tip as you will cause flooding on your floor. But if you do have the room for the hot water, pour it into your sink of tub and let the hot water sit for about 15 to 20 minutes and then try using a plunger to push the loosened clog down the drain.

These are two of the most commonly recommended approaches for the do-it-yourself home repair guy for loosening and clearing a clogged drain. It might just clear the problem for you. The tip costs almost nothing but a little bit of time on your part to try it out for yourself. But if you try this and it doesn’t successfully clear your clogged sink or tub, or if the clog keeps recurring, then you really do need to call a professional plumber to clear the clog for you. A professional plumber will use a snake that can reach up to 200 feet or more and remove all kinds of debris from your drain lines.

Doors and Windows Maintenance Tips

It’s important to keep your home in good working condition, not only for comfort and energy efficiency but also for appearance and marketability. Here is a handy checklist to help you maintain your windows and doors:

  1. Check for tight-fitting weather strips on the bottoms of every exterior door before the winter season. This will help keep pests out and improve energy efficiency.
  2. Adjust deadbolt strike plates and door knobs twice a year to ensure your doors shut tightly as changes in temperature and weather conditions can cause problems with the door latches. You can add plastic-foam weatherstripping afterward for good measure.
  3. Using a silicone-powder lubricant, lubricate the tracks and hinges on your doors annually.
  4. Lubricate your garage door track and ensure the surrounding area is sealed to stop insect invasion.
  5. Check for fogging in double-paned windows. This is a sign that the seal has failed, and the window will need to be replaced.
  6. Replace single-pane windows with double-paned windows. With current tax credits and energy bill savings, this project will pay for itself in just a few years.
  7. Check for drafts around your doors and windows every season. If you discover that air is creeping in, remove the interior window trim and seal the leak with caulk or spray-foam insulation. If you determine that you need to replace your windows, keep in mind that fiberglass and vinyl products are less moisture and temperature sensitive than wood products.
  8. Inspect the fame and molding around doors and windows for wood rot annually.
  9. To reduce chances of replacement down the road, apply a fresh coat of polyurethane to stained windows and doors.

Garden Maintenance Tips

Although many of us tend to live inside of our homes and don’t really think about the exteriors, there are going to be times when we must turn our attention in that direction. This is especially true when the snow begins to melt in the spring and it uncovers all of the items that were left in our yard over the past winter. When this happens to you, what can you do to bring your yard back to life and to make it an enjoyable environment, both for your family and for your neighbors? Here are a few tips that can help you to get through this difficulty.

One of the first things that you should consider is the fact that yard care and landscaping should be done in the springtime, just as spring cleaning on the inside of your home is done at that time. You should make it an effort to completely clean up the yard during the springtime, as it will be of benefit to you throughout the summer time when most people tend to be out of doors. Of course, the amount of effort that you put into the spring cleaning on the outside the home is going to differ depending upon the needs of your yard. In some cases, it’s just going to be a matter of tidying up a little bit and picking up some of the items that may have been buried under the snow. In other cases, however, more landscaping is going to be needed to beautify the yard and to make it a haven at your home.

Have you thought about planting a garden this spring? This is also something that can be very beneficial but it is going to take some work on your part. Not only are you going to have to prepare the garden in advance, the garden maintenance is also going to be something that needs to be considered. If you find that it is getting away from you, you do have some options which will help you to get back on track again. In some cases, you can bring in the assistance of family and friends who can generally get a garden in good shape in an afternoon’s time. You may also find it beneficial to hire an outside service who can maintain the garden on a weekly basis. That will help to take some of the pressure off while allowing you to enjoy everything the garden has to offer.

You should also keep in mind that after the spring cleanup has been completed, you are going to need to maintain the area. Set aside time every week to do your yard work, regardless of whether it is mowing the lawn or cleaning up after children and pets. If you take the time to continually work in the yard and to make sure that you are not allowing it to get too out of control, you would be surprised with how much you are able to enjoy the area. It will also help to cut down on the amount of work that is required.
